Training Workshops
The Southern Centre workshops are available to all people who want to increase their knowledge in providing recreational and leisure opportunities for people with disabilities. This may include professionals within the disability sector, support workers, teacher aides and parents. We have different levels of training available but can also cater workshops to your organisations or groups needs.
Training sessions with the Southern Centre can include:
- Introduction to Multi Sensory Rooms
- This session is for those with little or no experience in multi sensory rooms. Participants will have an introduction into how the Southern Centre began and a tour of the various pieces of equipment. We will discuss how the equipment can be adapted and used in sessions and have a brief look at the variety of environments that can be created. This introduction is for approximately an hour and can be scheduled at any time. Contact the Southern Centre to make a booking.
- Adaptive Activities
This workshop covers the general development and history of multi sensory rooms as they moved through their beginnings in the Netherlands through Europe and to New Zealand. Participants will look at the individual design of the Southern Centre and what makes it unique. This will include the interactive switch system and how the Southern Centre can change to suit the needs of each individual. These workshops are held once per term. Contact the Southern Centre to enquire and make a booking.
The Southern Centre are currently in the re-development of our adaptive activites training workshop. Please contact us for alternative training we are providing.
- Teachers
- The Southern Centre can create a programme just for your class. You can link class projects or themes to sensory sessions which may increase the understanding of students and create learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Whether you are doing a project on the environment, the weather, animals, geography or travel the Southern Centre can incorporate those themes into the environment and create a setting specifically for you. Contact the Southern Centre and discuss you ideas and student learning goals.
