Sensory Sessions

Southern Centre sensory sessions provide participants with the opportunity to explore and interact with the environment at their own pace. Sessions are booked in 30 minutes slots, because we have found that to be the optimum amount of time to spend in this type of sensory environment. Groups are kept to a maximum of 8 participants, as this also adds to the sensory stimulation. Parents and support workers are not included in this maximum number, but we do encourage that parents and support workers get fully involved in the sessions. Booking a session enables your group to have the whole space to yourself.

The Southern Centre regularly changes the theme of the environment, to ensure that visitors are always seeing something new. However with our system we can also cater an environment to suit your own personal needs. Come along and experience the Southern Centre for yourself and talk to us about creating your own sensory setting. Here are some options that we can provide:

Relaxation

The Southern Centre is still and calm in this setting. Interactive lighting remains static. Soothing colours glow softly through the sails and tubes. The relaxing music provides the perfect ambience for visitors to enjoy the comfort of the gel bed, watch the twinkling stars and let go of their anxieties.

Red Room

If your favourite colour is red, you'll love this one. Everything in the Southern Centre is programmed to shine red. Red bubbles, a red shadow wall, red interactive lighting that can be controlled to move a cross your body.

1/2 Dark 1/2 Light

This setting was created for two brothers, one who loves light and the other who is very sensitive to light and prefers to play in the dark. The Southern Centre uses black out curtains to create the perfect play environment for both brothers in one room. One half the Southern Centre projects bright, interactive lighting onto the floor and walls. On the other side the lights are dimmed and the stars twinkling.

Tracker lights

The Southern Centre is very dark in this setting. The focus is on the light which moves across the floor. Visitors can change the shape, speed, direction and colour of the light using colourful and sensitive switches. Visitors are also able to bring their own custom made switches (eg. head switches, elbow switches) which will fit with the Southern Centre systems.

Southern Centre staff are available to advise on activities and assist with the creation of your perfect environment. Contact us for more details.
